A History of E-Books

The last few years have seen exponential growth in the popularity of e-Books. The characteristics of this product have attractive features both to the purchaser and seller. The purchaser is able to access large numbers of titles worldwide which can be immediately downloaded at any time from a variety of devices which have internet access. The seller is able on-line to market his product worldwide and benefits from a global audience which can purchase products 24/7, and which compared to traditional methods of retailing books has minimal overhead costs.

In 1971 Michael Hart at the University of Illinois created what was effectively the first e-Book. After typing the United States Declaration of Independence into a computer, he was told it was unacceptable to distribute it to numerous people via email as this would crash the system. Accordingly he made it available for people to download and the first e-Book was created. In the same year he launched a volunteer scheme called Project Gutenberg to create electronic copies of cultural texts which were to be placed in an archive.

In 1985 the Voyager Company was established which published books on CD-ROM’s and progressed to “expanded books”. Digital Book Inc. in 1993 started selling floppy disks with 50 e-Books in a Digital Book Format (.dbf). Generally speaking earlier e-Books were produced for limited audiences in technical or niche subjects.

E-Books go Mainstream

Towards the end of the 1990’s there was an increase in the speed of developments. In 1998 the first dedicated e-Book readers were released, including SoftBook, Rocket e-Book and Cybook. The year also saw the first libraries in the US start providing free e-Books to the public via their websites, although at that time they could not be downloaded and usually related to professional, scholarly or technical subjects. These services expanded in 2003 when libraries started offering free downloadable fiction and non-fiction e-Books to the public.

Microsoft in 2000 released the e-Book reading software, Microsoft Reader. It utilised ClearType technology to enable the type to be viewed on smaller devices and was suitable for Windows computers and PocketPCs. In the same year Stephen King released his book ‘Riding the Bullet’in digital format only, and which could only be read on a computer. During the initial 24 hours in excess of 400,000 copies were downloaded. The beginning of the decade saw the major publishing houses begin to take an interest, and in 2002 Harper Collins and Random House began offering some of their titles as digital products.

In 2005 was started, enabling the download of free textbooks and travel guide e-Books. The same year Amazon expanded its interest with the purchase of software company Mobipocket, which provided e-Book reading software for portable devices. Amazon in 2007 launched a dedicated e-Book reader called Kindle, which could download e-Books and other digital media over Wi-Fi or the mobile network from the Amazon website. Over 90,000 e-Books were available, including over 100 New York Times bestsellers. in 2008 became the first to sell e-Books for iPhones.

April 2010 saw Apple launch the iPad, which included e-Book reading software iBooks. It also launchediBookstore, a virtual bookstore selling e-Book downloads. During the second quarter of 2010 Amazon announced that its e-Book sales surpassed those of hardcover titles, and also in 2010 Google eBookstore opened with 3 million titles. In May 2011 Amazon announced its e-Book sales now exceed all of its printed book sales.

e-Books have arrived.

Deep Voice Mastery – Can You Download The Deep Voice Mastery Guide For Free?

Is there actually a deep voice mastery torrent where you can freely download the deep voice mastery guide, or all those sites are just scam sites? Well in this article I will discuss how some of these torrent sites works and how unscrupulous they can be to scam you into thinking you can download things for free.

If you have a high-pitched voice and want to deepen it, then you should already know that there are many options for you to do this. There are many guides available online which can teach you how to deepen your voice. One of such guide is called the deep voice mastery guide and was written by Rudy Haynes, a professional voice coach who has been teaching people how to improve their voices for a long time.

The deep voice mastery guide is an instant downloadable digital book that you get once you pay for it. However many people go to search-engines making search terms such as: deep voice mastery torrent, hoping to get to a torrent site where they can freely download a copy of this guide. The simple truth s that most of those torrent sites are fake, and just want to scam you!

How do they want to scam you, you ask? Well this is how: Most of the times, they will ask or require you to pay some small amount of money before you can download the deep voice mastery torrent or any other torrent you want to download, usually it is nothing that much. Most of the times, the amount they want you to pay will range between: $1 to $5. And from the look of things this would seem to be a deal most people are ready to take since the deep voice mastery guide cost somewhere close to $50 on the official website.

However the truth is that once you pay the amount to these torrents sites, you won’t find any deep voice mastery torrent to download! You would have wasted your $5. Not only that, the owners of the torrent site you used now have your credit card number and you will occasionally notice them taking out money off your account without your permission!!

So if you have a high pitched squeaky voice that you want to deepen and want to get a copy of the deep voice mastery guide to show you how to do this, it is better that you head over to the official website (link below this article) and buy the guide from there so you will not get scammed by people claiming to have deep voice mastery torrent.

Book Review: Event by Slavoj Zizek

Philosophers have great difficulty writing books for the general reader. They either use technical terms and obscure language that give the impression of deep thought, beyond the reach of the uninitiated and essentially boring, or they write in plain language that risks their profound insight being dismissed as little more than what our grandparents called common sense. It was Bertrand Russell who said that 'common sense is not so common' and he, of course, was the supreme exemplar of the art of conveying deep thoughts in everyday language. In more recent times, Roger Scruton has admirably carried forward this tradition, but regrettably, Slavoj Zizek has not.

The author is described on the back cover of the book as 'one of the world's greatest living philosophers.' The title of the book, 'Event,' is described as 'the new and highly contested concept.' This immediately raises the Confucian question: is something simple being made into something complicated? Are we being sold common sense wrapped up as philosophy?

An Event is described as a 'radical rupture' and 'an occurrence that shatters ordinary life,' after which 'nothing remains the same,' Zizek appears to be referring to a discontinuity over time yet makes no mention of Hume's Law. Similarly, the reader is promised a discussion of 'which conditions must be met for us to perceive something as really existing' without reference to John Locke's sense perception or George Berkeley's deep meditation on the tree in the quad. In fact, the author ignores the events associated with British empiricism.

Zizek says that he is aware that something has been left out. The book ends with 130 notes, the last of which states that 'this overview is, of course, far from complete,' and mentions two particular omissions: analytic philosophy from the early Wittgenstein to Donald Davidson, and the eventual status of quantum processes in subatomic physics. In what is described as an 'accessible commute length' book, it is particularly difficult to decide what to include and what to leave out, and Zizek has opted for a mix of modern scholarship, recent history and popular culture.

The central theme of Event is said to be the impact of three great philosophers, Plato, Descartes and Hegel, who revolutionized thought in their time, thus constituting three great Events in the history of philosophy. None of Russell's readers will doubt this contention and it was probably well understood by many well-read people of earlier generations. What Zizek adds in describing the nature of an Event is mostly drawn from existentialist theory, arthouse and film noir cinema productions, Eastern mysticism and sexual anecdotes. One puts down this book wondering why 'one of the world's greatest living philosophers' attempted to popularize his work in this way.

Book Review: Influence And Lead By Michael Nir

Michael Nir authored the (free) book Influence and Lead , which can be found through the Kindle bookstore. I found this book, consisting of seven chapters, to be quite insightful. This book discusses teams – from team relationships, to different stages of a team, to how to change behavior within a team – along with some general business information, exercises for teams and individuals, and what to expect within the team environment.

As Nir points out, there are specific reasons individuals like working in teams, and why some teams work better than others. There is a certain level of reciprocity, commitment, liking, authority, and honesty that mush be readily available and readily given by all team members. In addition, Nir discusses RACI, and acronym that explains the different things that need to occur to make a team successful: Responsible, Accountable, Accounted, and Informed. This is insightful as it explains what is happening within the team as each of these important aspects are given and received by team members.

Nir discusses some things that effective teams do to become successful; he defines what leaders are and the different leadership styles; that conflict in teams is essential; and how to perform a stakeholder analysis. He gives examples for ice breaker activities that can be performed with a new team or a team that brings in new members, and activities anyone can conduct to help them become aware of their body movement and facial expressions when interacting with their team and stakeholders (very beneficial, in my opinion).

Nir explains the stages of a team, which are: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Nir goes on to explain each of these stages, what is happening in the team dynamics, and how a team can go backwards in the stages if a new team member is brought in or if conflict occurs without addressing and fixing the conflict.

The SWOT analysis that Nir discusses is informative, especially for someone who is not familiar with what a SWOT analysis is, or why one is used in a business setting.

All in all, I enjoyed this book. It is an easy read with a great deal of information, even for the seasoned team player. For me, I think the only one that was lacking was possibly specific experiences of the author in how different ideas or situations can be handled or taken advantage of to gain additional insight into the team and how to use that information to help make the team stronger . I would have also liked to see specific examples of good and bad leadership styles. However, for a free e-book download I found it to be great.

Sidney Sheldon’s Chasing Tomorrow: A Book Review

Sidney Sheldon’s Chasing Tomorrow is a novel that I enjoyed reading three years ago when I had the pressure off my tasks. I had requested my brother to buy some of Sidney’s novels and paid him well. Fast forward today in the spooky environment of my new home when evening approaches, I thought reading a novel was a great way to forget everything and even myself. That’s why I got hold of the book to write a review.

About the Book

“Chasing Tomorrow” is a continuation of the novel “If Tomorrow Comes”, also authored by Sidney. Both have mysteries, sorrows, and culmination of ecstasy and joy. The heroine, Tracy Whitney is a con artist and so is her man, Jeff. After playing naughty and corrupt games on evil people and making an ill-gotten fortune, both of them decide to settle down in the continuing novel “Chasing Tomorrow”. A misunderstanding leads to their separation and no matter how much Jeff looks for her, he finds no trace of her. Then Tracy, having her son (which Jeff doesn’t know), is playful and happily living in a ranch high up on the mountains with her old single neighbor. Then gradually she comes to know through a police detective that Jeff’s life is in danger in Europe and someone canny behind the scenes is playing his game on top of them. Tracy remembers how Jeff has once saved her life (as narrated by Sidney in the first novel “If Tomorrow Comes”). She, therefore, leaves her son in her neighbor’s care and flies to Europe following a riddle game arranged by the canny person on top of them.

This person tortures Jeff brutally on the skull and Tracy makes it in time to kill the villain with her small revolver after a thorough ghastly fight. The police also come into the picture and Jeff is taken to the hospital. But Tracy cannot stay all along by his side because of her past as a con artist and the corrupt games she played and cheated on people about which other police detectives are interested now. So she has to fly to her son and neighbor.

There is a reconciliation of Jeff and Tracy on her mountain ranch. But Tracy decides to stay separate and tells him so for the sake of their son. Jeff agrees and leaves. Her son calls him Uncle Jeff and is sad to see him go. He asks his Mom if they will meet Uncle Jeff again because he kind of really likes him. Tracy replies subtly, ” Maybe. You never know what tomorrow holds for you.”

Book Review: Leader Shift – The 11 Essential Changes Every Leader Must Embrace

This article reviews Leader Shift by John C. Maxwell – what I consider to be the pinnacle to 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and 5 Levels of Leadership. If you’re serious about developing as a leader, this book demands reading. Below are several benefits you gain.

What You Gain

  • A compass

There’s nothing like having an anchor when things are constantly changing at the speed of light. An over abundance of information compounds the matter. You end up overwhelmed and sometimes confused by the message. Leader Shift, however, steers your thinking and behavior. You discover what changes are crucial for longterm success. It will serve as a great reference.

Maxwell presents a clear discussion of the 11 necessary shifts with examples, quotes, and recommendations. One, for example, relates to thinking in terms of a calling instead of a career.

  • Motivation

After reading almost every chapter, I stopped to reflect. While in some respects I’m on target, in others I’m motivated to make the necessary changes. You’ll be inspired to do the same.

  • Criteria for transformational leaders

Like a great teacher, a great leader transforms people. Once they touch something or someone it’s never the same. As a result of reading the book, you discover what distinguishes transformational leaders from trained leaders. In contrast, the latter ask people to follow, while the former ask people to make a difference. You have a frame of reference to stay focused.

  • Advice on how to have tough conversations

At some point you will need to have the tough conversation. I recently ventured into this territory with a client. The leader of this organization brought me in to assess the needs and concerns of the middle managers. Many of the issues related to leadership. Because I was in the middle of reading this book, I used the outline presented by the author to discuss the feedback. I think you will benefit from having the outline handy also.

  • How to assess situations

Besides having tough conversations, you’ll need to evaluate various situations at pivotal points. The author recommended three good questions: What’s best for the organization? What’s best for other people within the organization? What’s best for me?

  • Resources for ongoing support

Maxwell never leaves the reader hanging. In any event, you have access to resources mentioned at the end of the book. Take advantage of the John Maxwell Blog or the free digital download: Thinking like a leader: The Top 10 Truths about Leading.

Bear Sanctuary: A Book Review

Bear Sanctuary is a beautiful illustrated book by Victor Watkins, who has worked in the field of animal welfare for over three decades. For bear enthusiasts, or even those who have a keen interest in learning more about what caring for and ensuring the wellbeing of these animals entails, the book is a valuable resource. In addition, it provides an updated account of the efforts being made to end the abuse and cruelty bears continue to endure.

Victor Watkins and 'Libearty'

In 1992, Watkins established the world's first international campaign with the purpose of protecting bears from cruelty, both in captivity and in the wild. The campaign, LIBEARTY, was run by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (now known as World Animal Protection) and introduced the concept of a bear sanctuary for the first time.

His new book focuses on the creation of the LIBEARTY campaign and the subsequent establishment of the Libearty Bear Sanctuary, near Zarnesti, Romania. Set up across 70 hectares of hazel and oak forest in the Carpathian Mountains, the Libearty Bear Sanctuary offered a refuge to mostly Brown Bears that had been rescued from tragic living conditions and were being kept, for example, in small cages in restaurants and gas stations to attract customers.

Bear Sanctuary explains how, in the mid-1990s, with Romania soon to become an EU member and changing attitudes with regards to animal welfare, the country ordered the closure of poorly run zoos and banned individuals from keeping bears captive. Watkins doesn't try to whitewash the complicated process of 'legal confiscation' that the Libearty Bear Sanctuary had to go through in order to rescue the mistreated Brown Bears.

Despite such hurdles, Watkins narrative captivates with his depiction of how the Brown Bears were brought to the sanctuary, administered the necessary veterinary care, and helped to begin their journey of recovery after years of suffering.

A Safe Haven

With acres of lush forest around them, the bears enjoy their days swimming pristine pools, climbing and scratching the trees, and foraging for food. Watkins tells the story of Suzi, for example, who was rescued from a derelict zoo after having spent years in a circus. At first, Suzi only dared to move tiny distances from one particular tree; eventually, however, she began to mix happily with the other bears and venture further into the forest.

In another example, Max, a brown bear captured as a cub, had spent his entire life chained up for the entertainment of tourists or locked in a small cage. When he was rescued, vets discovered he was completely blind, most likely from the abuse he suffered when he was young. They created a special area for him within Libearty, where he could safely use his other senses, such as smell and hearing, to move around.

These are only two of the many success stories witnessed in this wonderful Romanian bear sanctuary. Today it provides shelter and hope to over 60 rescued bears, who can, for the first time in their lives, enjoy the freedom this idyllic setting provides.

A Valuable Resource and a Wonderful Read

Watkins' informative, well-crafted words allow the reader to focus on the importance of animal welfare and the on-going need for animal welfare organizations to protect, not only Brown Bears, but all animals, from the kind of suffering some of them still endure. Bear Sanctuary is a wonderful testament to the dedication of a few inspiring individuals whose unwavering compassion and effort have led to the rescue of dozens and dozens of bears.
